Today we would like to show you an Excel trick that most people will probably not know.

You are often forced to do this in Excel, even with so-called

Date lists

to work i.e. create a table with date ranges. This can be consecutive data or days of the week, it may only be working days, months, or even years that are listed.

Excel already offers a very good function to automatically create such date lists or date ranges. To give you a better idea of what this is like, we will use the following figure to show you exactly what we mean and then show you how you can create these Excel data lists.

The Excel figure with the date columns may look a little confusing, but it’s actually quite simple.

CREATE A DATE LIST IN EXCEL

If you need a consecutive date column, simply enter the first desired date in a cell. Then you drag the small dot down to the bottom right of the cell while holding down the mouse button.

You can then see the date column in the lower right corner

Green icon

which itself

Autofill options

called in Excel. If you click on it, a small context menu will open, as you can see in the image above.

Here you will find some date functions for automatically generating data lists.

  • Fill days
  • Fill in working days
  • Fill in months
  • Fill years

Which function you choose is of course up to you. So that you can see the different results, we have shown you 4 date columns in the figure, which each represent the 4 date filling options.

If you choose “Fill in days “, Excel creates a list of the consecutive days of the week for the selected cell range.

With ” Fill in working days ” only the weekdays are generated in the date column, the days on the weekends are not taken into account.

With ” Fill in months ” the current date is increased by 1 month and with ” Fill in years ” the year is increased by 1 year.

With these 4 date functions in Excel, it is very easy to create a date range quickly and easily and without much work.
