There has been a lot of talk about the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya lately. We tell them where it will soon be possible to get acquainted with her amazing life story.

Many people in our country know Anna Politkovskaya. The Russian journalist and human rights activist dedicated her life to serving the people – without exaggeration. In general, Anna is known all over the world – not only in her native country.

She went from a newspaper editor to a well-known journalist, whom everyone knew as a fighter for justice, a person covering the Chechen war, exposing corruption and other crimes of the authorities.

Anna traveled a lot to war zones, her work was truly serious and dangerous. She provided assistance and support to women who lost their children in the war, conducted her own investigations, openly wrote about the war, abductions, and torture, sharply criticized the current government, and her articles accused police officers of killing civilians. In total, according to her investigation materials, about 40 criminal cases were opened. Just think!

In the middle of the 2000s, threats began to come into Politkovskaya. They tried to intimidate her and thereby force her to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya. But this did not help: Anna did not back down even when they tried to poison her.

In the end, everything ended very tragically. On October 7, 2006, Anna Politkovskaya was killed in the elevator of her house. Until now, 15 years later, the culprit, namely the main customer of the murder, has not been found. Lom-Ali Gaytukaev was detained for organizing the crime, but Politkovskaya’s relatives and colleagues are sure that someone much more influential paid for the brutal reprisal.

In recent years, Anna has worked in the editorial office of Novaya Gazeta. Her office is still intact, colleagues often remember her, and on the 15th anniversary of her death, an investigative documentary was even released.

Mother Russia

Today, almost 16 years later, a new film is being shot – now a feature film. A biopic called “Mother Russia” (Mother Russia) undertook to shoot by the Australian studio Luminosity Entertainment. The film will be directed by James Strong.

Anna Politkovskaya will be played by British actress Maxine Peake, best known for the TV series The Village and the film The Club. The chief editor of Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, will be played by Belfast star Ciarán Hinds, and Anna’s husband, Jason Isaacs.

Beslan, as well as her work on reporting on the war in Chechnya.

Filming is scheduled for summer 2022 and will take place in the UK and Latvia. But the date of the premiere of the film is still unknown – just as it is not clear whether the Russian audience will have the opportunity to watch the film.
