The homologation of degrees is the procedure through which you can validate in Spain an academic degree obtained in another country. To carry out the process of homologation of a degree, whether it is a Bachelor’s degree, University, or another type, you must collect a series of documents to be able to start this process through the Ministry of Education.

What is needed to homologate a degree in Spain?

All those people who graduated from an official educational institution outside of Spain need to homologate a degree if they want it to be used in the country, being as valid as in the country of origin. You will need to take into account the following:

Documentation to homologate a title in Spain

  • Certified copy of the identity document and nationality of the applicant. This document must be issued by the competent authorities of the applicant’s country of origin or provenance or by the Spanish authorities with jurisdiction over immigration.
  • Certified copy of the title on which the homologation or certification that accredits the issuance of the title is requested and if this is the case, its official translation.
  • Certified copy of the academic certificate of the studies that the applicant has carried out, in order to be able to obtain the degree in Spain. This document must state the official duration of the studies, the academic years, the study plan followed, the subjects studied and their workload, and, if necessary, the official translation of all this information.
  • Proof of payment of the fee contemplated in the process of homologation of a degree.
  • Accreditation of linguistic competence to be able to practice the approved profession in Spain.

Tax payment

As with any other procedure that is carried out through the administration, the homologation of a title also requires the payment of a fee to be able to carry out the said procedure. Proof of payment of this fee must be submitted along with all the documentation indicated. To be able to pay it, you only have to present form 170 at any bank, savings bank, or collaborating entity. If you carry out the procedure from abroad, you can download the model online and make the transfer to the account indicated in the Ministry of Education.

Deadlines and times

In Spain, the homologation of a foreign university degree can take on average between 9 months and 2 years. During this period your file will be open and the Administration may request additional documentation in order to close the process. From the website of the Ministry of Education, you can check the status of your file at any time.

Once the homologation of the degree is approved, after the study is carried out by the Ministry of Universities, the resolution will be issued, based on national and international regulations, together with the evaluation of each case. The resolution may be negative in the event that the application is denied, pending regularization in the event that additional training is required, or positive in the event that the approved title is granted.

How to homologate a foreign degree in Spain

If you have obtained a higher education degree outside of Spain, whether it is a university degree (diploma, bachelor’s degree, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree) or training cycles or professional training, you can start the process of homologating foreign degrees in Spain through the Ministry of Education. Likewise, if you want to know how to homologate a Bachelor’s degree in Spain, you must follow the same steps.

In the first place, it is important to gather all the documentation required to start the process to get your degree approved. This process will allow you to access a regulated profession that treats any professional with the same conditions, whether with a Spanish or foreign degree. The qualification of the professional exercise must go through the homologation of the foreign title.

To homologate a degree in Spain you have two ways: online or face-to-face.

Approve an online degree

To homologate your degree online, you only have to access the Electronic Headquarters of the Ministry of Education. This is the most comfortable option since you can do it at any time and from anywhere, as long as you have access to the Internet. In addition, you can check the status of your application at any time.

Once you access the web portal, you must fill in the form to homologate a foreign degree.

Approve a degree in person

Another option to start the procedures and get your degree approved is to do it in person. First of all, you must download the form from the page of the Ministry of Education, in order to deliver it by hand already completed. You can access the form for official university degrees or the form to homologate a Spanish academic degree. Once you have filled out this paper, you must deliver it together with the documentation requested in any public registry of the General Administration of the State or of the Autonomous Community where you reside.

Whichever route you choose, before requesting the homologation of a degree you must first legalize it, certify it, and make a sworn translation, if necessary, before submitting it to the Ministry of Universities together with your application and the payment of the 170 fees. Only then can you get the credential of your approved title. Remember that on the website of the Ministry of Education you will find additional information on how to validate a degree in Spain in a simple and effective way.
