Oral candidiasis is an infection caused by an excess of the fungus Candida Albicans in the oral cavity. It appears in the soft part of the mouth, from the tongue to the inside of the cheeks, but can reach the throat, the palate, the tonsils and the gums.

Although anyone can get oral thrush, it occurs more often in infants and older adults, since they have weaker immunity; in people with a suppressed immune system or certain diseases; or in people taking certain medications.

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms that occur with oral thrush include loss of taste, cracking and redness at the corners of the mouth, a cottony feeling in the mouth, white sores in the mouth, and minor bleeding if the sores are rubbed or scratched.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) detail that candidiasis can be diagnosed with a visual examination of the mouth. Also, the healthcare professional may take swabs from the mouth or throat for examination.

”Thrush in the mouth, throat, or esophagus is usually treated with antifungal medication, applied to the inside of the mouth for 7-14 days. These medications include clotrimazole, miconazole, or nystatin. For severe infections, the most common treatment is fluconazole (an antifungal medication) taken by mouth or intravenously,” the CDC says.
