Pimples that appear around the genital area are the result of a common condition that can be caused by a wide variety of factors. These small pimples are usually uncomfortable and irritating, although they are not serious in most cases. If you have ever come across them in your intimate area, you should know that you suffer from folliculitis. But, why do pimples appear in your intimate area? It is important to know both the possible causes, as well as the different treatments that exist in order to address them in time.

To delve into the subject, the expert  Belén Gómez, a gynecologist at the Infanta Leonor Hospital and a regular collaborator with Chilly, says that “acne in the genital area is usually due to obstruction and inflammation of the hair follicles and, frequently, of their superinfection. It usually occurs on the mount of Venus and on the labia majora and English, that is, where the pubic hair is present, although on some occasions it can reach the buttocks”.

Among the most frequent causes and risk factors of folliculitis, Dr. Gómez highlights the following: very high humidity in the area, hair removal with a blade, lack of hygiene or incorrect intimate hygiene, exposure to thermal baths or hot pools, antibiotic treatments prolonged, manipulation of the obstructed follicles, diet and abrasive products used in the genital area.

Pimples that appear around the genital area are the result of a common condition that can be caused by a wide variety of factors.

To combat folliculitis effectively, Belén Gómez shares a series of recommendations that focus on “making some changes to hygiene, hair removal and the use of products on the genital area.”

-It is recommended to start with hygienic or physical measures such as applying clean cloths moistened with hot water on the inflamed area and keeping them until they cool down. Go change the hot clothes for 10 or 15 minutes, three times a day. This maneuver will favor the correct hygiene of the area and the opening of the follicle so that they do not become infected and prevent the pus from accumulating inside it.

-Do not shave the genital area or wax with depilatory cream during the acne episode, as we can further irritate the area and produce lesions that could be superinfected with the skin’s own bacteria.

-Avoid handling small grains.

-Normally no medical treatment is required: daily washes with antiseptic soap. Do not use specific soaps for facial or skin acne as they could be too strong for the genital area.

-In case of fungal infections, antifungal creams such as fluconazole will be required, always prescribed by a specialist.

Once the episode of folliculitis is over, Belén Gómez recommends following these measures “to prevent a new outbreak”:

-Use underwear made of natural fibers, such as cotton.

-Favors the ventilation of your intimate area, avoids tight clothing, and excessive rubbing, especially during exercise, to avoid moisture remaining on the skin.

-Wash the area after excessive sweating and keep the area dry and clean.

-Opt for laser hair removal.

-Use an intimate hygiene gel with antiseptic properties, always bearing in mind that the genital area has mucosa and that aggressive products cannot be used. An ideal product is found among the Chilly range of intimate gels, where Chilly Protect stands out, the brand’s variant that provides more defense and protection. Its formula is enriched with thyme and sage extracts, which favor the protective action against external agents. In addition, it is enhanced with an anti-odor molecule, effective against odors, and has a pH of 5, so it respects the natural physiological balance of the external genital mucous membranes and the skin areas that surround them, helping to protect the vaginal area.
